Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (for brushing)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds (for topping)

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the active dry yeast with 1 cup of warm water. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together 3 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 teaspoon of salt.
  • Once the yeast mixture is frothy, slowly add the flour mixture to the yeast, stirring until a rough dough forms.
  • Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead it for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  • Place the kneaded dough into a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
  • Once risen, punch down the dough to release the air. Divide the dough into equal portions and shape each into a round loaf.
  • Place the shaped loaves on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover them with a towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a small bowl, whisk the egg and 1 tablespoon of flour together. Brush the mixture over the loaves.
  • Sprinkle the tops of the loaves with sesame seeds.
  • Bake the loaves in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until they are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  • Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack.

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Dough scraper
  • Baking Sheet
  • Kitchen Towel
  • Pastry Brush

Notes

  • Ensure the water is warm, not hot, to keep the yeast alive.
  • Add herbs like oregano or thyme for extra flavor.
  • Let the bread cool completely before slicing for the best texture.
  • For a crustier bread, place a pan of water in the oven while baking.
