Ingredients

For the Dal:

  • 1 cup dry lentils preferably red lentils
  • 6 ounces canned crushed tomato or tomato puree
  • 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper adjust to taste
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt more to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons minced fresh cilantro for garnish

Instructions

Cooking Instructions:

  • Step 1: Rinse the lentils under cold water until the water runs clear.
  • Step 2: In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed lentils, 1 cup of water, and 1/8 teaspoon of salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes until tender.
  • Step 3: In another pan, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add ginger and garlic, sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  • Step 4: Stir in crushed tomatoes and cayenne pepper. Cook for 5 minutes to meld flavors. Add black pepper to taste.
  • Step 5: Add cooked lentils to the tomato mixture, stir in heavy cream, and simmer for 5 more minutes.
  • Step 6: Remove from heat and stir in minced cilantro. Adjust seasoning as needed.
