Ingredients

Liquid Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons Warm Water For activating yeast.
  • 1 tablespoon Active Dry Yeast To help the scones rise.
  • 1 cup Hot Water To mix with other ingredients.
  • cup Vegetable Oil For the dough.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt To enhance flavor.
  • ¼ cup Granulated Sugar For sweetness.
  • 1 large Egg To bind the ingredients.

Dry Ingredients

  • 3 ½ cups All-Purpose Flour For the dough.
  • 2 quarts Frying Oil Peanut, safflower, or canola oil work well.

Instructions

  • Step 1: In a small bowl, combine warm water and active dry yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, combine hot water, vegetable oil, salt, sugar, and activated yeast mixture. Stir and beat in the egg until smooth.
  • Step 3: Gradually add all-purpose flour, starting with 2 cups, mixing until a dough forms. Add remaining flour until the dough pulls away from the bowl.
  • Step 4: Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Step 5: Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
  • Step 6: Punch down the dough, roll out to ½-inch thickness, and cut out circles with a round cutter.
  • Step 7: Heat frying oil in a large pan over medium heat until hot.
  • Step 8: Fry scones for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  • Step 9: Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with honey before serving warm.
