Ingredients

  • 4 cups low-fat milk
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 4 large eggs
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch

Instructions

  • Start by gathering all your ingredients and measuring them out. This makes the cooking process smoother and more enjoyable.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar and cornstarch until well combined. This will help prevent clumps in your custard.
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, warm the low-fat milk until it’s hot but not boiling. Stir occasionally to prevent it from scorching.
  • In another bowl, whisk the eggs and pure vanilla extract together until they are fully blended.
  • To prevent the eggs from scrambling, slowly pour a small amount of the hot milk into the egg mixture while whisking continuously. Gradually add more milk to the egg mixture until fully combined.
  • Pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining milk. Stir constantly over medium heat until the custard thickens and coats the back of a spoon, about 8-10 minutes.
  • Remove the custard from heat and strain it through a fine-mesh sieve into a clean bowl. This step ensures a silky texture. Allow it to cool before serving.
