Instructions

  • Step 1: Cook the Bacon - In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the bacon until crisp, about 5-7 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towels, retaining 1 tablespoon of grease.
  • Step 2: Sauté the Onions - Add butter to the skillet with bacon grease. Once melted, add onions and sauté for about 10 minutes until softened.
  • Step 3: Add Flavor - Stir in brown sugar, salt, and pepper, sautéing for another 15-20 minutes until onions are caramelized and golden brown.
  • Step 4: Deglaze the Skillet - Pour in beer or wine, scraping the bottom of the skillet. Simmer for a couple of minutes until slightly reduced.
  • Step 5: Combine the Ingredients - In a mixing bowl, combine the onion mixture, bacon, Gruyère, sour cream, and mayonnaise. Mix well and adjust seasoning if necessary.
  • Step 6: Bake to Perfection - Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer dip to an oven-safe skillet and bake for 25-30 minutes until bubbling and golden brown.
