Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped apples
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar for topping
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon for topping

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease your donut pan with vegetable oil or non-stick spray. Chop half a cup of apples into small, bite-sized pieces.

Mixing Ingredients

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, ground cinnamon, and salt.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk the unsweetened applesauce, vegetable oil, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth and well combined.
  • Slowly add the dry ingredient mixture into the wet ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. Fold in the chopped apples carefully.

Baking

  • Spoon the batter evenly into the prepared donut pan, filling each cavity about 3/4 full.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the donuts comes out clean. Let cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Topping

  • Mix 1/4 cup granulated sugar with 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon in a shallow dish. Lightly brush or spray the warm donuts with vegetable oil or melted butter, then dip each donut into the cinnamon sugar mixture to coat.

Equipment

  • Donut Pan
  • Mixing Bowls
  • Whisk or electric mixer
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Small knife and cutting board
  • Cooling rack

Notes

  • Do not overmix the batter to keep donuts light and fluffy.
  • Coat chopped apples lightly in flour before folding in to prevent sinking.
  • Store donuts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
  • Freeze individually wrapped donuts for up to 2 months for longer storage.
  • Reheat donuts in a microwave or toaster oven and add extra cinnamon sugar topping if desired.
